Blair to sign $2m Warriors deal

The Warriors are set to announce Adam Blair has signed to the club on a three-year deal for $650,000 a season, totalling $1.95-million.

It is believed Blair's management had wanted a four-year contract for the 31-year-old, but the club have managed to reduce that down to three.

That's significant for the Warriors as it would have been anyone's guess what Blair would be like as a player in 2021, even though he's someone who prides himself on his fitness and commitment.

However, it still remains a risk to commit so much money to a player of Blair's age and they will be keeping their collective fingers crossed that he keeps playing at his current level and doesn't pick up any serious injuries.

While his salary will average out to $650,000 a season, it is possible that it could be front loaded, so Blair gets more money in the first year and less in the last, as this is a way NRL clubs regularly manage their books to keep under the salary cap.

Blair was under contract for next season at the Broncos, but Wayne Bennett told Blair that he would allow him to talk to other clubs as it was unlikely they'd be able to offer a big deal for 2019 and onwards.

The Dragons and Knights were the other two clubs interested in signing Blair, but the Dragons pulled out when they were able to get James Graham from the Bulldogs.

As first reported by Stuff in May, the Warriors showed their interest in Blair early in the season and this was sure to have counted in their favour.

The Warriors do have a fair amount of money coming off their books next season, with veteran prop Ben Matulino and Jacob Lillyman leaving, to Wests Tigers and Knights respectively.

Matulino and Lillyman were offered contracts to remain at the club, but both players would have had to take pay cuts to remain. That was particularly disappointing for Lillyman, who would have brought up his 10th year with the club next season.

However, Lillyman is excited about what lies ahead for him at the Knights and believes their coach Nathan Brown is building something special in Newcastle.

Also at the Warriors, Manu Vatuvei would have also been on significant money and certainly more than what the incoming Gerard Beale or Peta Hiku are getting.

The Warriors may have to wait 10 days after Blair signs the contract before they can make any official announcement because of the NRL's rules over giving players a cooling off period.

However, Blair can wave that right to have that 10 day delay and may want to get all the business out of the way before leading the Kiwis at the upcoming World Cup.

Meanwhile, it is understood an announcement will be made soon that Auckland Rugby League will become a part owner in the Warriors.

The organisation has a huge portfolio of around $70 million thanks to the sale and redevelopment of Carlaw Park and it's a natural fit for it to get involved in the Warriors again.
