Four new All Blacks named in extended squad for Rugby Championship

Steve Hansen and his fellow All Blacks selectors have named four new caps in a 39-man squad for the Rugby Championship.

Crusaders backs Sevu Reece and Braydon Ennor, Chiefs loose forward Luke Jacobson and Highlanders first-five Josh Ioane have been named as All Blacks for the first time.

The extended squad, named in Auckland on Tuesday night, will have its first assignment against Argentina on July 21 - the All Blacks first match of the 2019 Rugby Championship.

As predicted by Stuff last week, Ioane has been named and could make his All Blacks debut off the bench in Buenos Aires on July 21 with Richie Mo'unga and most of the Crusaders' All Blacks likely to be rested for the test against Argentina following Saturday's Super Rugby final.

The squad is expected to be whittled down as the Crusaders' All Blacks return with an emphasis on managing player workloads ahead of the World Cup in Japan that begins in September.

Brad Weber has earned an All Blacks recall, overtaking Chiefs teammate Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi.

Weber's sole test for the All Blacks came against Samoa back in 2015.

Chiefs prop Atu Moli and Hurricanes hooker Asafo Aumua, who have previously been named but are uncapped, are now a chance to make their test debuts.

Despite four hookers being named, Chief Nathan Harris has been left out with Aumua and Liam Coltman being preferred alongside Dane Coles and Codie Taylor.

Crusaders midfielder Ryan Crotty, who could be out for up to eight weeks, has not been named after undergoing surgery for his fractured thumb suffered against the Hurricanes last weekend.

Even in his absence, Ma'a Nonu, who played 103 tests between 2003 and 2015, has missed out on a place in the hotly contested midfield.

Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu has been recalled following Crusader Scott Barrett fracturing a finger in the semifinal victory over the Hurricanes. Barrett, who could be out for up to six weeks, is set to miss the majority of the Rugby Championship.

Barrett and Crotty, along with the injured pairing of Tim Perry and Damian McKenzie were not considered because of injury.

Highlanders loose forward Liam Squire made himself unavailable, feeling he wasn't ready for test rugby after a run of injuries.

Squire's Highlanders teammate Waisake Naholo has missed out with Crusaders wing Reece winning his spot following a blistering run of form in Super Rugby.

Highlanders loose forward Luke Whitelock joins Naholo and Harris in the unlucky category.

The selectors seemingly opting for the versatility of Jacobson and Dalton Papalii.

Crusaders fullback David Havili, who made his test debut against Argentina in Buenos Aires back in 2017, must have also been on the brink after returning to form in a major way in 2019.

Hansen's squad is made up of 23 forwards (four hookers, seven props, three locks, one utility forward and eight loose forwards) and 16 backs (three halfbacks, three first five–eighths, four midfielders, two utility backs and four outside backs).

"The challenge and the aim of the first two matches is not only to play winning rugby but attractive, exciting rugby. To do this, we'll have to quickly reconnect the players from the various Super Rugby clubs back into the All Blacks' ways. We will need to master our game by improving our execution. To do this, our skillsets and decision making will be our key focus," Hansen said.

"Being a Rugby World Cup year, there's a lot of excitement and anticipation from our many fans not only in New Zealand but also overseas."
