Israel Folau has 'bled Australian rugby of millions', claims former Wallaby Peter FitzSimons

Israel Folau owes has "bled Rugby Australia of millions" of dollars and has knowingly put the sport "through agony", claims former Wallabies lock Peter FitzSimons.

FitzSimons - now a Sydney Morning Herald columnist and prominent broadcaster – gave Folau a spray on Nine's Sports Sunday television show.

He was incensed at Folau's assertion that he wanted an apology from Rugby Australia (RA) and an admission that they were wrong to sack him for posting on Instagram that homosexuals, among others, were headed for hell unless they repented.

FitzSimons' outburst was unleashed during his Sports Sunday appearance.

"Camera one on me," he said. Israel Folau and your demand for an apology… mate, bring it in tight.

"Last year you put up a post that caused Rugby Australia to bleed for three weeks. It was a homophobic slur, biblically based, whatever.

"Last year you put it up. Three weeks of ugly headlines. Teams losing. Supporters, sponsors running for the exit. It was a disaster.

"Despite that, Rugby Australia signed you up for A$4 million for four years. Here we are almost a year later and you put up an identical post. You put your right index finger up above it about to send. You know, and you've acknowledged this, at the moment you press send, you will put rugby, your team, your teammates, through exactly the same agony as last year and you [still] pressed send.

"What happened? We've been engulfed by two months of this nonsense, this disaster. Millions of dollars being bled from rugby. Sponsors for the exits, members turning away. And you think rugby owes you an apology. In the words of the late [Australian rugby league reporter] Peter Frilingos, that'll do me. Unbelievable."

Folau made his apology demand on a Sky News television show last week where he was interviewed by former Wallabies coach turned broadcaster Alan Jones.

FitzSimons claimed it was a scripted interview.

"Give me a break. It was ridiculous," he said.

Meanwhile, Folau has told fellow worshippers has "spiritual warfare is very, very real" and his pastor has warned the sacked Wallabies fullback's critics that the church's followers "do not fear anyone".

The Daily Telegraph reported Folau gave a sermon, saying "spiritual warfare is very, very real" and "the devil is out here like a roaring lion".

He said Jesus "is going to come back soon" and "born-again believers" had to be ready for his return.
