'Tongan Thor' cited in wake of loss in Cape Town

Emerging Queensland Reds prop Taniela Tupou has been cited for alleged foul play in the wake of his side's loss to the Stormers in Cape Town.

'Tongan Thor' is alleged to have contravened Law 9.13 in that "a player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously" for an incident that involved Stormers winger Craig Barry.

The citing commissioner deemed that the incident, which happened in the ninth minute of the match, had met the Red Card threshold for foul play.

After the match Nick Mallett, the former Springbok coach and now commentator, along with former Springbok Naas Botha, said Tupou should have been red carded at the time.

The case will be heard in the first instance by the SANZAAR Foul Play Review Committee and puts Tupou's involvement in the Reds next match against the Brumbies in Canberra on April 7.
