Cardinal Mafi and Latter-day Saint leaders discuss ways to help all Tongans

Elder Cardon is a member of the Seventy and a counsellor in the Pacific Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Tukuafu is an Area Seventy in the Church, and resides in Tonga.

Cardinal Mafi is the fourth Roman Catholic Bishop of Tonga, and the first Cardinal from the island nation.

During their meeting on Monday 5 June, the leaders discussed ways Catholics and Latter-day Saints are helping Tongan individuals, families and communities.

Tonga’s Cardinal in stable condition

Radio Tonga reports the Cardinal received positive test results on Monday after collapsing in Auckland over the weekend.

His Eminence was on his way to Rome for a Vatican Committee meeting and ended up canceling his trip due to his medical condition.

He has expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the people of Tonga and members of the church for their prayers and support for his fast recovery while in hospital in Auckland.

Cardinal Mafi wants to rebuild Catholic primary school system, but money a problem

However, the Cardinal said reviving the Catholic primary school system would need a lot of money, but the church was not financially prepared for the task.

August last year marked 150 years since Fr Lamaze established St Stanislaus College and a primary school at ‘Ahopanilolo in 1865.
