Diana Ross brings Motown glamour to Glastonbury

The Motown star exuded glamour in a flowing white fur coat and feathered headdress, as she opened with the Pride anthem I'm Coming Out.

"I love singing during the daytime where I can see your faces and see your eyes," she declared, further seducing an already enthusiastic audience.

"Can you see me, 'cos I can see you?"

In other words, Ross understood the brief: The Sunday teatime slot is all about audience goodwill; and she had it in spades.

Diana Ross coming back to play legend slot

The Motown star was originally due to make her debut at the festival in 2020, before the event was called off during the pandemic.

After another Covid-enforced cancellation, she'll bring hits like Baby Love and Upside Down to the Pyramid Stage on 26 June.

The Sunday teatime slot traditionally draws the event's largest crowds.

Dolly Parton's appearance in 2014 attracted Glastonbury's biggest-ever audience; while Kylie Minogue's triumphant set in 2019 became the most-watched Glastonbury performance ever on the BBC, with 3.9 million viewers tuning in.

Diana Ross reveals first album in 15 years, Thank You

Thank You is the follow-up to Ross's 2006 album I Love You, and was recorded entirely in her home studio during the pandemic.

"This collection of songs is my gift to you with appreciation and love," said the former Supremes singer in a statement.

"I am eternally grateful that I had the opportunity to record this glorious music at this time".

The title track, released at midnight on Thursday, is a shimmering gospel-pop song that recalls the star's Motown years - with a noticeable hat tip to Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's You're All I Need To Get By.

Diana Ross: 'Every concert is a blessing and a gift'

The former Supremes star's six-date tour will follow her Sunday "legends slot" at next year's Glastonbury Festival.

The Diamond Diana Top of the World Tour shows will also be her first live appearances in this country since 2008.

Ross, 75, who had solo hits with Upside Down, I'm Coming Out and Endless Love, described her return to these shores as "like coming home."
