Firm aims to increase data penetration

Digicel PNG is on the path now to increase data penetration throughout the country through the use of its recently launched service, free Facebook.

Acknowledging Facebook as the largest social media platform globally with 1.6 billion customers, Digicel PNG partnered with Facebook to provide free browsing to its PNG customers.

Digicel managing director mobile, Shivan Bhargava, said Facebook may possibly be a starting point to get more Papua New Guineans onto social media.

Free Facebook takes off quickly

Digicel head of products, Paul Byrne, said the company has seen positive response following the soft launch in July 22.

Not stating specific numbers, he says Digicel has seen a massive uplift from a numbers perspective.

He also noted that this remarkable result has been achieved prior to any advertising campaigns being rolled out.

“We just started our advertisement campaign on Monday so we’re expecting really big uptake and increase in people using Facebook on our network.”

Digicel's 'saik ap' morning

This is the concept behind Digicel PNG’s efforts to get staff involved in weekly Staff Motivate Sessions.

This morning was no different as staff were led by Loop PNG and Trend Media staff as they carried out a dance movement routine energised with Justin Timberlake’s Can't stop the feeling song playing in the background.

The “active” 30 minute staff “encouragement” activities has been in place since last year, following a staff company “Wellness & Peak Performance week”.

Digicel delivers free Facebook to PNG

The option to switch to free Facebook was officially launched last night (July 26) at the Laguna Hotel in Port Moresby. This exciting development was introduced to Digicel staff during a soft launch at the company’s headquarters in Port Moresby and other regional sales offices in Lae, Kokopo and Mt Hagen on July 22.

The newly-launched option to switch to free Facebook mode is accessible via smartphone

Facebook apps or on Facebook.com only when attached to the Digicel network.
