The track became one of Justin Bieber's biggest hits, spending six weeks at number one in the UK.

"That was a song I had written for '÷'. It just wouldn't have made it," Sheeran said in an American radio interview on Monday.

He said Justin's input had made the Grammy-nominated song "what it is".

He took a year-long break from social media in December 2015 but returned last month. And on New Year's Day, he posted a short video of him holding a sign saying: "New music coming Friday!"

Since then, he has been tweeting song lyrics and "÷" signs.

His first album was called +, while his second was called x.

Ed Sheeran is co-hosting the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Friday, by which time he will have released something.

It's not certain whether that will be a full album or just one track.

Two tweets also contained what are presumably song lyrics.

The heirs of songwriter Ed Townsend have sued Sheeran in New York federal court for copyright infringement of the 1973 soul hit "Let's Get It On." Townsend and Marvin Gaye co-wrote the song.

"The Defendants copied the 'heart' of 'Let's' and repeated it continuously throughout 'Thinking,'" the lawsuit claims. It alleges there are "melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions" in the two songs that are "substantially and/or strikingly similar."

Gaye died in 1984 and Townsend died in 2003.

The British singer has been spotted with a ring on his wedding finger and there's been some consternation among his admirers.

Sheeran has mostly stayed off the pop-culture radar in recent months.

But a few weeks ago fans spotted him smooching girlfriend Cherry Seaborn in the background of a Taylor Swift Instagram photo from her July 4th celebration.

Above them hung a sign which read, "Happy 1st Ed-Iver-Cherry!"

More recently the Grammy winner appeared in a friend's photo with what looked to some as a wedding ring.

After his first song, Sheeran turned around around to pick up his second guitar, revealing the legend's number across his back. The crowd erupted.

Saturday night marks Sheeran's last concert after four-and-a-half years touring, as he takes a break to get ear surgery.
