Smaller Island States Welcome the Federated States of Micronesia

As the meeting got underway, Prime Minister of Cook Islands and Chair of the Smaller Island States (SIS), the Honourable Henry Puna said “In the true Pacific Way, we wholeheartedly agreed to support and welcome FSM into the SIS family.”

President of the Federated States of Micronesia, H.E Peter Christian was then led into the Chamber by the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Dame Meg Taylor.

Forum summit underway in FSM

The summit is being held under the banner "Small and Far: Challenges for Growth".

The meeting begins with the Smaller Islands States Leaders meeting, while all of the island countries will be represented at Thursday's meeting of the group of African Caribbean and Pacific group of nations.

The summit proper gets underway on Thursday with the plenary session set for Friday and the leaders retreat scheduled for Saturday.

47th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders' meetings in FSM confirmed

In preparation for the 47th Forum Leaders Meeting, the Forum Officials Committee (FOC) Meeting, the governing council of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, will meet in Suva on 9 and 10 August preceded by the Smaller Islands States Officials Meeting and the Pacific ACP Officials Meeting on 8 August, 2016.

Challenging time for FSM's Augustine at FINA World Championships

This time it was the turn of Dionisio Augustine in the 50m Breaststroke.

Dionisio took to the blocks in heat 4. This was not the first time that the swimmer had performed in Kazan. He had been a competitor in three events at the 2013 Summer Universiade in the nearby Aquatics Palace. On that occasion he recorded a time of 34.67 seconds in the 50m Breaststroke when finishing 5th in his heat.

Traditional carvers create trophies for Micronesian tournament

A group of traditional carvers from a small atoll in Federated States of Micronesia say they're honoured to have been selected to create the trophies for their state's annual sports tournament.

The Yap games attracts about 900 athletes from across the state, who compete in a dozen sports.

Larry Reigetal is one of the carvers from Lamotrek Atoll, he says the distinctive trophies are modelled on the Micronesian outrigger canoes and take about four days to make using traditional methods.
