Naomi Osaka withdraws from French Open after refusing to do news conferences

On Sunday a joint statement from Grand Slam organisers said Osaka could face expulsion from the tournament.

The 23-year-old said last week she would not do news conferences at Roland Garros to protect her mental health.

She said on Monday she "never wanted to be a distraction" to the event.

In a tweet, Osaka revealed she had "suffered long bouts of depression" since winning her first Grand Slam title in 2018.

The Japanese four-time major winner added that she gets "huge waves of anxiety" before speaking to the world's media.

French Open could be postponed because of increasing coronavirus cases

France entered a third nationwide lockdown on Saturday, which president Emmanuel Macron said he expected to end in mid-May.

The Grand Slam is due to take place at Roland Garros from 23 May to 6 June, with qualifying the week before.

In 2020, it was postponed to the autumn because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"We are in discussion with [the French Tennis Federation] to see if we should change the date to coincide with a possible resumption of all sports and major events," Maracineanu told France Info radio.

Nadal wins French Open for his 20th grand slam title

With his record-improving 13th triumph at Roland Garros, world number two Nadal is now tied with Swiss Roger Federer as the player with the most men's singles major titles.

Nadal was the early aggressor as he choked Djokovic to win the opening set in brutal fashion having made only two unforced errors. He then kept a firm grip on a subdued Djokovic in the second set under the roof of court Philippe Chatrier.

Djokovic advances as Pliskova dumped out

Some rare sunshine bathed the Court Phillipe Chatrier but it was dull viewing for the few spectators allowed in to watch the 33-year-old glide effortlessly through.

The opening set was done and dusted in 22 minutes as Djokovic won the last 10 points and the second set was only marginally more competitive.

Berankis, ranked 66th, needed courtside treatment on his back before the start of the third set but got back to his feet to endure more punishment from the clinical Serb.

Injury forces Serena out of Roland Garros

The American, who turned 39 this week, had been due to play Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova in the second round later but after a warm-up decided the injury was too severe.

Williams, a three-time former champion at Roland Garros, said she may not play again this year.

Williams had suffered the problem during her semi-final loss to Victoria Azarenka in the U.S. Open and said ahead of her Roland Garros campaign that she was not at 100% physically but had recovered sufficiently to play.

French Open: Serena Williams cruises into second round

“I just need to play with more confidence,” Williams said, by way of explanation for how her 7-6 (2) 6-0 victory over 102nd-ranked Kristie Ahn unfolded Monday, “like I'm Serena.”

Well, yes, she was more herself for the latter half of the contest, which by the end really wasn't much of a contest.

And this is how Ahn described the sensation of being across the net from that version of Williams, the one where she is at her very best.

Roger Federer to miss French Open, other events after knee surgery

It's only the second operation for the 38-year-old Federer - the other was on his left knee in 2016 - and one that is certain to raise questions about his future in tennis.

He posted on social media Thursday that his knee had been an issue "for a little while."

"I hoped it would go away," he said.

The man who has spent more weeks ranked No 1 than any other and owns a men's-record 20 grand slam titles said the operation was in his home country of Switzerland on Wednesday. He currently is ranked No 3 behind rivals Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

French Open: Novak Djokovic escapes disqualification

The world number one, a three-time runner-up and seeking a maiden Roland Garros crown to complete the career Grand Slam, defeated Czech seventh seed Tomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-3, claiming a place in an eighth French Open semi-final and sixth in succession.

But the 29-year-old Serb, who will face Dominic Thiem of Austria for a spot in the final, admitted he was lucky to escape being kicked out of the tournament in the second game of the third set.

French Open: Nadal withdraws due to wrist injury

With third-round action in full swing out on the Roland Garros claycourts, Nadal dropped a bombshell midway though a sunny afternoon when he announced he was withdrawing because of an injury to his left wrist.

For one of the game's fiercest fighters, it was a lame way to go - especially after he had dropped only nine games in reaching the third round where he had been due to play compatriot Marcel Granollers on Saturday.

Federer out of French Open as fitness issues end grand slam streak

The 34-year-old world number three's appearance at Roland Garros had been in doubt after he missed the Madrid Open with back problems and suffered an early defeat at the Italian Open in the build-up to the claycourt major he won in 2009.

The last time the 17-times major champion was absent from one of the sport's four majors was at the 1999 US Open.

"I regret to announce that I have made the decision not to play in this year's French Open," father of four Federer said in a message posted on Facebook.
