During his two spells in charge of the Blues, ​Mourinho turned the Bridge into a fortress as the club lifted three Premier League titles.

But when he has gone back to his old stomping ground as a visiting boss, things have not panned out so well.

Indeed, in five trips across the Premier League and FA Cup, Mourinho is yet to taste victory when in charge of a domestic rival.

After this weekend's reverse left Spurs four points adrift of his old club, we look at Mourinho's tale of woe in familiar surroundings in west London.

Mourinho was sacked on Tuesday, two days after a dire display in a 3-1 defeat to bitter rivals Liverpool, leaving the Reds 19 points ahead of United in the Premier League table.

A common theme of Mourinho's time at Old Trafford was his incessant demands for greater backing in the transfer market, despite spending a small fortune.

Sections of the media suggested United grew frustrated with Mourinho not getting the best out of players he identified, which meant alternative options were sought after.

United revealed the news in a short media release less than 48 hours after a 3-1 Premier League loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

That left United sixth in the table, 19 points behind the Premier League leaders after 17 games.

A United statement read: "Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

Rooney, 31, made his return to Everton earlier this month, ending a trophy-laden 13-season stay at Old Trafford.

United and England's all-time leading goalscorer, Rooney made just 15 Premier League starts in 2016-17.

But Mourinho is already missing the forward and said he would be tough to replace.

"I miss him a lot, I miss the guy a lot, I think he's a fantastic guy," the Portuguese tactician said, via The Telegraph.

Though Mourinho would not divulge the names of his targets, Inter's Ivan Perisic and Nemanja Matic of Chelsea are thought to be at the top of his wishlist.

United have signed Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku so far in the transfer window, while Mourinho has previously suggested he may be forced to settle for just one more addition.

By comparison, Manchester City have spent an estimated £200million on six players, while Chelsea (four) and Liverpool (three) have recruited more fresh talent than United so far, but Mourinho remains calm about the situation.

United eased past Swansea 3-1 on Sunday to end a four-match winless streak in the Premier League.

Mourinho was forced to use a make-shift defence for the trip to Liberty Stadium, with duo Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw late withdrawals, while Daley Blind was only fit enough for the bench.

Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian completed the back four, and Mourinho had some words for players who deemed themselves unfit on the weekend.

Mourinho endured an embarrassing return to Stamford Bridge as former club Chelsea piled on the misery in a 4-0 Premier League rout on Sunday.

United were put to the sword early, conceding a goal to Pedro inside 30 seconds before Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N'Golo Kante consigned the visitors to a third defeat of the season, leaving Mourinho and Co. seventh in the table.

United have no time to lick their wounds, with arch-rivals Manchester City awaiting in the fourth round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

It was the first time Watford had beaten United since 1986.

The Premier League said it was also the first time Mourinho had lost three consecutive games as a manager since 2006.

Although the 'Special One' did suffer three successive defeats at Chelsea in 2015, before he was sacked by the Londoners, one of those was on penalties after a draw in the Capital One (League) Cup.
