Venezuela searches for landslide survivors as more rains fall

With 10 more days of rain forecast, rescuers are racing to reach those feared buried before new mudslides are triggered.

Twenty people are confirmed to have died and emergency workers have still to reach some of the worst-hit areas.

President Nicolás Maduro said more than 8,000 homes had been destroyed.

While 11 states were affected by the heavy rains, most of the fatalities occurred in Mérida in the Andes, where streets in mountain villages were converted into raging torrents.

Rescuers were seen using their hands to dig up the ground and retrieve bodies, local television showed, and authorities said more victims could be trapped inside the debris. Rescuers were also shown carrying the injured through narrow lanes on makeshift stretchers.

Within the last 24 hours authorities have so far reported 11 incidents of houses or walls collapsing in the Mumbai area, officials said.

In one neighbourhood about half a dozen shacks located at the base of a hill collapsed on top of each other, officials said.

Video on social media showed a torrent of black mud plummeting down from a mountain top and on through the city towards the sea. Several houses were destroyed or buried.

Kyodo news agency reports that the bodies of what appear to be two victims have been found in the port district.

A witness told national broadcaster NHK: "I heard a horrible sound and saw a mudslide flowing downwards as rescue workers were urging people to evacuate. So I ran to higher ground."

Rescue work is continuing for people still missing at the site in the Hpakant area of Kachin state.

A wave of mud triggered by heavy rain engulfed those collecting stones, the fire service said.

Myanmar is the world's biggest source of jade but its mines have seen numerous accidents, many involving people who scavenge for stones.

The country's fire service department said in a Facebook post: "The jade miners were smothered by a wave of mud, which hit after heavy rainfall."

The weekend landslide in Tendepo ward of Tambul-Nebilyer district came amid a bout of heavy rain

District administrator Phillip Talpa said an excavator was quickly sent to the area with help from police and the local community.

"They were able to dig out 10 bodies. Two are still believed to be buried under ground. The excavator is already on site, digging a few sites that they believe the bodies are hidden under."

Mr Talpa said that with ongoing rain, there was a high risk of more landslides occuring in the area's hilly surrounds in coming days.

Two buried in Solomons landslide

The slip occurred near the island's corrections facility partially covering some of the staff housing there.

According to police one house was severely impacted with two people still buried under the rubble.

One of them has been located in the bathroom of the house and rescuers are working to dig them out but the other has yet to be found.

Three other family members who were in and around the house at the time managed to escape relatively unscathed.

20 people killed when flooding wipes out part of school in Indonesia

At least 11 of those who died in the flooding Friday were students, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho of the disaster mitigation agency. Some students are still missing. The flooding was in Mandailing Natal, North Sumatra.

Some of the students were buried under debris and mud after the Aek Saladi river overflowed, according to state media.

At least 9 dead in Guatemala mudslide

Rescue workers used shovels and backhoes in a desperate effort to reach survivors Friday, pulling one man alive from the rubble of his collapsed home more than 15 hours after the landslide hit late Thursday.

The hill that towers over the village of Cambray, about 10 miles (15 kilometers) east of Guatemala City, partly collapsed onto a 200-foot (60-meter) stretch of the hamlet just before midnight, burying an estimated 68 homes.
