Andy Warhol Marilyn Monroe print sells for record $US195 million at auction

Shot Sage Blue Marilyn is one in a series of portraits Warhol made of the actress following her death in 1962 and has since become one of pop art's best-known pieces.

Held in the collection of Swiss art dealers Thomas and Doris Ammann, it was sold by Christie's at an auction in New York. Pre-sale estimates had reached as high as $US200m.

The painting sold for a hammer price of $US170m but added fees gave it a final price of $US195m.

Marilyn Monroe's famous "Happy Birthday" dress could sell for $3M

The beige, rhinestone-encrusted dress Marilyn Monroe wore to sing "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy is being sold by Julien's Auctions in Los Angeles on November 17.

Created by Hollywood costume designer Jean Louis, the dress sold for $1.27 million at a Christie's auction in 1999, making it the most expensive personal item of clothing ever to be sold at auction.

It's estimated to sell for up to $3 million this time around.
