Melania Trump backs NBA star LeBron James after Trump insults

James had said in an interview that Mr Trump was divisive and had emboldened racists.

In response, Mr Trump questioned James' intelligence, saying it was not easy to make the NBA player "look smart".

However, Mrs Trump's spokeswoman said James was "working to do good things" with a school in his Ohio hometown.

She said Mrs Trump wanted "to have an open dialogue about issues facing children".

Earlier this week, James told CNN during an interview with Don Lemon that sport had offered him the opportunity to meet people of different backgrounds and race.

Daily Mail pays Melania Trump $2.9 million to settle lawsuit

The settlement was announced in a joint statement from the Daily Mail and Trump's lawyers.

"We accept that these allegations about Mrs. Trump are not true and we retract and withdraw them. We apologize to Mrs. Trump for any distress that our publication caused her," the Daily Mail and Mail Online said in the statement.

But others, including Tommy Hilfiger, Thom Browne and now Gaultier, have said they would not have a problem.

Asked whether he would dress Mrs Trump, Gaultier replied: "Definitely. It's not my objective but why not?"

Speaking at the British Fashion Awards on Monday, the French designer said it was "not a question of politics".

Mrs Trump called those accusations "lies" and saying Mr Trump was "egged on" into "boy talk" during a 2005 tape in which he made lewd comments about women.

"I believe my husband. I believe my husband," she said in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper on Monday.

"This was all organized from the opposition. And with the details ... did they ever check the background of these women? They don't have any facts."

She also said she hadn't heard her husband use that kind of language before.
