Saudis sentence five to death for journalist's murder

Khashoggi, a prominent critic of the Saudi government, was killed inside the kingdom's consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul by a team of Saudi agents.

The Saudi authorities said it was the result of a "rogue operation" and put 11 unnamed individuals on trial.

A UN expert said the trial represented "the antithesis of justice".

"Bottom line: the hit-men are guilty, sentenced to death. The masterminds not only walk free. They have barely been touched by the investigation and the trial," Special Rapporteur Agnes Callamard wrote on Twitter.

     

Tongan man accused of ‘Utulei nightclub murder pleads not guilty

Tevita Kātoa of Ma’ufanga is alleged to have killed Pita ‘Aipolo in 23 August 2018.  

He has pleaded not guilty to his charges of murder, manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm, the Kele’a newspaper has reported.

‘Aipolo was rushed to hospital where he died from his injuries, one month later.  

The court was told the incident occurred after the accused was denied entry into the nightclub because he was too drunk.

A security guard at the bar told the court he saw Kātoa allegedly beating the deceased.

Gang member gets jail for murdering south Auckland dad

Villiami Taani shot Abraham Tu'uheava and his wife Yolanda in an 'execution-style killing' on Greenwood Road in Māngere last May.

Mr Tu'uheava, a patched Nomads member, died on the rural stretch but his wife survived, despite being shot twice in the head.

In the High Court at Auckland this morning, Taani was jailed for life, with a minimum non-parole period of 17-and-a-half years.

His cousins Fisilau Tapaevalu and Mesui Tufui were found guilty of murder and attempted murder after a four-week trial last month.

They will be sentenced next Friday.

 

Kathua child rape and murder: Three men given life sentences

Three police officers were found guilty of destroying evidence and sentenced to five years in prison.

The victim, who belonged to a Muslim nomadic tribe, was found in a forest near Kathua city in January 2018.

The case sparked widespread anger and made headlines when Hindu right-wing groups protested over the men's arrest.

Eight people, including a former government official, four policemen and a minor, were charged in connection with the crime. One of them has been acquitted and the minor is set to be tried separately.

US policeman jailed for Australian's murder

Mohamed Noor shot Justine Ruszczyk Damond as she approached his patrol car to report a possible rape behind her Minneapolis home in July 2017.

He said the shooting was a mistake.

In court, Ms Damond's father, John Ruszczyk, called the killing "an obscene act by an agent of the state".

"Justine's death has left me incomplete - it is as if I have lost a limb or a leg," he said in an impact statement.

Ms Damond's fiancee, Don Damond, read an emotional statement addressed directly to her.

16 charged in Bangladesh for burning girl alive

Nusrat Jahan Rafi, 19, was doused with kerosene and set on fire on the roof of her Islamic school on 6 April, days after filing a complaint.

Headmaster Siraj Ud Doula, targeted in the complaint, is among those charged.

Police say he ordered her murder from prison when she refused to withdraw her accusations against him.

They described the preparations for the killing as being like a "military plan".

The case sparked mass protests in Bangladesh and shone a spotlight on the vulnerability of victims of sexual assault and harassment in the country.

Man admits killing Epalahame Tu'uheava

Viliami Taani appeared this morning in the High Court at Auckland and pleaded guilty to Tu'uheava's murder and the attempted murder of Tu'uheava's wife on May 1, 2018.

NZ Herald reports Justice Anne Hinton convicted him on both charges and gave him a first strike warning.

Shocked by Tu'uheava's death, friends and family told the Herald he was raised in a family that attended church every Sunday and was well connected to the local Otahuhu and Mangere communities.

Tu'uheava was also known as Hame or Abraham.

Tongan man charged over murder of 50-year-old US national

Taniela Siale Lopiseni Salakielu, 22, of Henderson, Nevada, was charged Friday with murder, a first-degree felony; burglary, a second-degree felony; and theft, also a second-degree felony in 2nd District Court.

The state’s media reports said Salakielu was arrested on 22 August 2018, in relation to the death of Rand Hatch, after Hatch was found dead in his Bountiful home a few days earlier.

Bountiful Police began investigating Hatch’s death after his body was found by his brother on 19 August.

Two Tongan gang members get life imprisonment for murder in US

Tēvita Kaihea was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison on Friday after being found guilty by a jury of first-degree murder, attempted murder, two counts of robbery, vehicle theft and a felon in possession of a firearm, the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

His accomplice Charlie Hola was previously sentenced to 48 years and 8 months to life in prison on June 22 on related charges, a press release reportedly said.

Young woman attacked and killed in Tonga in wake of Gita

Matangi Tonga reports an 18-year-old man has been charged with the murder of an 18-year-old woman.

It's alleged he assaulted her with a machete on a road in Nuku'alofa the day after Cyclone Gita hit the capital.

The website reports police said the accused and deceased were in a relationship and had one child together.

The accused was allegedly intoxicated when he saw the victim walking with other people after swimming at a public pool on Vuna Road at Ma'ufanga.

A police spokesperson said the woman died on the spot.
