New York City names first female police chief

Keechant Sewell, 49, is a 23-year veteran of the Nassau Police Department in nearby Long Island, where she became chief of detectives in September 2020.

For Mr Adams, the move fulfils a campaign pledge to name a female commissioner.

The NYPD is the largest police force in the US.

Speaking to media on Wednesday morning, Mr Adams - a former NYPD captain- said that women often are "sitting on the bench" and "never allowed to get in the game" when it comes to policing.

"That is stopping today," he said.

Man charged with deadly subway stabbings

  Rigoberto Lopez is charged with two murders and two attempted murders at stations in Manhattan and Queens.

City police posted a photo of a knife. All of the victims are said to be homeless people.

US media report the suspect, 21 and himself homeless, was arrested wearing blood-soaked clothes.

Spike in NYC workplace fatalities in 2014 leaves 78 dead on the job

A total of 78 people died in fatal workplace incidents last year, a 22% increase from 2013, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Workplace safety advocates attributed the uptick, a trend that has been in effect since the 2008 recession, to a lack of enforcement.

 “Regardless of industry, there isn’t enough enforcement of our health and safety laws,” said Nadia Marin-Molina, a safety and health specialist at the New York Committee for Occupational Safety.

Violence once again mars New York's West Indian Day Parade

     

The violence left one man dead and an aide to Gov. Andrew Cuomo in critical condition.

Cuomo identified his wounded staffer as Carey Gabay, a first deputy general counsel at the Empire State Development Corporation. Gabay was walking with his brother near the Brooklyn parade route at 3:40 a.m. when he was caught in the crossfire between two gangs, according to police officials.

FAA says technical problem causes East Coast flight delays

This was reported by the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The agency is investigating an automation problem at an air traffic center in Leesburg, Virginia, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.

The center handles high-altitude air traffic for a region that includes Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Washington's Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport.
