PNG Orchids stars grateful for rugby league return

PNG Orchids internationals Elsie Albert, Amelia Kuk, Shae De La Cruz and Therese Aiton all lined up for the South Logan Magpies last weekend in the opening round of the Holcim Cup.

The Magpies defeated a West Brisbane Panthers side in their first competitive match in almost five months and Kuk said it was great to be back playing.

PNG Orchids' historic win changing perceptions

It's the only country in the world where rugby league is a national sport, a dubbed national obsession, yet it wasn't too long ago when the women's side were booed from their own sidelines, fighting a constant battle to gain support from their league-loving country.

But that all changed on Saturday, when Orchids stand-off Shirley Joe scored a last-minute try breaking the 16-all deadlock with England to secure the PNG women's first-ever test match win.

PNG captain Elsie Albert said hearing the crowds erupt in support while chanting the teams name was indescribable.

PNG Orchids named for world cup

The 24-year-old debuted for the Australian Jillaroos in last month’s curtain raiser to the PNG PM’s XIII and Australian PM’s XIII match against the PNG Orchids in Port Moresby.

She unfortunately missed out on selection into the Australian team for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

“We contacted her and she was over the moon to join the PNG Orchids. She was here last month and got on well with the PNG Orchids so she will not be new to the players. Her inclusion brings that experience to our side,” said Orchids coach, Dennis Miall.
