Man accused of killing Tongan activist named

27-year-old 'Inoke Tonga appeared in the Mu'a Magistrate Court yesterday, following Kefu's burial last week.

Polikalepo Kefu's death shocked the local and international community, sparking calls to legalise same-sex unions in the Kingdom.

Currently, homosexuality is considered illegal and although rarely enforced, still carries a maximum prison term of 10 years.

Tonga and Kefu were at a beach near Tatakamotonga before the murder occured.

Detectives identified him as a person of interest after interviews and a canvass of the area.

The large hall of the basilica in the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa, hasn’t seen many crowds since Covid restrictions were introduced a year ago.

But on Thursday night, people from across all parts of society packed every inch of available space in the venue, clad mostly in black and the traditional woven ta’ovala dress.

Tongan authorities have granted an exemption to the 50-person cap on indoor gatherings, so that people from across the Pacific country can come together for a candlelight vigil in memory of LGBTQ+ and humanitarian activist Polikalepo “Poli” Kefu.

Polikalepo Kefu was known for his work with Tonga's Red Cross, the local media association, and as a voice for youth.

He was also president of the local LGBTQI+ rights group who want to make sure his death is not brushed under the carpet.

Polikalepo Kefu, or Poli, was well recognised for his tireless devotion to a wide range of human rights causes.

The Red Cross described him as a shining star in the Pacific, and globally, who will be remembered and cherished for his dedication to equality for all.

27 year old charged with murder of prominent Tongan activist

The accused surrendered himself to Police last Saturday night and is remanded in custody to appear at the Magistrate Court.

41-year-old Kefu or Poli as he was known to many, died early Saturday morning.

Police said they are aware of misleading information circulating on Social Media claiming knowledge of a person responsible for Mr. Kefu’s alleged murder.

“That information is inaccurate and we ask the public to respect Mr. Kefu’s family during this difficult time. This is a tragic event, and our thoughts are with Mr. Kefu’s family, friends and wider community.”

Tongan activist Kefu’s death now treated as homicide

A press release will be released today, Acting Police Superintendent Tevita Vailea told Kaniva News last  evening.

He has refuted social media speculation regarding Kefu’s death as wrong but he did not provide any details about it.

As Kaniva News reported Saturday, unconfirmed reports claimed Kefu’s body was found at a beach in Tatakamotonga.

Kefu worked as a communication advisor for the Tonga Red Cross.

He was also the president of the Tonga Leitis Association and was known to many from all walks of life.
