Jury selection begins in singer's sex trafficking trial

It comes more than two years after he was charged with abusing women and underage girls for almost two decades.

The Grammy Award-winning singer faces charges including child sexual exploitation, racketeering and bribery. He has pleaded not guilty.

Potential jurors are being questioned over whether they can keep an open mind in the case.

Following jury selection, the trial is due to begin on 18 August and could last several weeks. A conviction could result in decades in prison for the 54-year-old.

Singer was ‘drugged for four weeks, raped and taken abroad’

It's the first time she's given details of the terrifying experience, which led to her retreating from the spotlight.

"Rape is like living murder, you are alive, but dead," she wrote.

"All I can say is it took an extremely long time, sometimes feeling never ending, to reclaim the shattered pieces of me."

Duffy had the UK's best-selling album of 2008 and won three Brit Awards and a Grammy, but she virtually vanished after releasing her second album in 2010.

Summarising the case, Lord Chief Justice O.G Paulsen said it had been proven beyond reasonable doubt that Tu’ifua “had sexual intercourse with the woman knowing that she was in a state of insensibility.”

Kaniva News reports the sexual assault occurred following a drinking session on November 11 last year.

The victim had been with a group of people she knew and after a night of consuming alcohol she was taken to a hut by Tu’ifua.

Eventually she passed out.

Indian anti-trafficking activists raped after staging street play

The women were forced into cars and raped in a "secluded area", police told BBC Hindi.

Police say they are investigating the incident but have not made any arrests.

The women were working with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to raise awareness about human trafficking in the remote Khunti district.

About 40,000 rape cases were reported in India in 2016.

Many cases, however, are believed to go unreported because of the stigma that is attached to rape and sexual assault.

India girl, 16, burnt alive after Jharkhand rape

Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the attacks in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand.

Police said the elders had ordered the accused rapists to do 100 sit-ups and pay a 50,000 rupee (£550; $750) fine as punishment.

They were so enraged they beat the girl's parents then set her on fire.

"The two accused thrashed the parents and rushed to the house where they set the girl ablaze with the help of their accomplices," Ashok Ram, the officer in charge of the local police station, told AFP news agency.

Facebook blackmailer jailed for rapes

Paul Leighton, 32, from Seaham, County Durham, created up to 40 fake Facebook profiles to befriend teenagers in the UK, Canada, the US and Australia.

He tricked them into sending him naked selfies, then blackmailed them into abusing young relatives.

He had earlier admitted a total of 21 offences at Newcastle Crown Court.

The court heard one 14-year-old from Florida was tricked into believing he was talking to a girl, then blackmailed into repeatedly raping his one-year-old niece.
