Sonny Bill Williams, Cooper set for sevens showdown

Williams has been included in the New Zealand squad to play in Wellington this weekend, a strong pointer he will also feature in the inaugural Sydney 7s world series leg on February 6-7 at Allianz Stadium.

The All Blacks' World Cup champion has taken a season off Super Rugby to seek selection for the Rio Olympics, and his new coach, Sir Gordon Tietjens, says Williams is ahead of schedule in his transition to the seven-a-side game.

Tonga sevens team hopeful for World Series boost

Tonga finished runners-up behind Australia at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Auckland, producing the biggest upset of the weekend by thrashing Samoa 41-5 in the semifinals.

That was enough to keep alive their hopes of making it to Rio, and they will join Samoa at a final repechage event next year.

In the past their efforts would also have earnt them a spot at the New Zealand and Australian legs of the World Series but World Rugby has yet to confirm how those places will be allocated.
