15 Tongans in NZ receive scholarships under Toloa Programme

The recipients will pursue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Law and Architecture

Minister for Pacific Peoples, Aupito William Sio said more Pasifika are embracing STEM opportunities, paving a pathway to educational success.

Now in its sixth year, the Ministry for Pacific Peoples (MPP) Toloa Programme is achieving its goal of helping Pacific Aotearoa to thrive.

Speaking at the award ceremony Madrid Espania Helu who travelled from Tonga to study Electrical Engineering at the institute said the scholarship would help relieved “financial burdens on his parents’ shoulders”.

Kaniva news reports the scholarships were awarded during an Award Ceremony event at Otago Polytechnic which was attended by Executive Directors of Otago Polytechnic, Executives of the Otago Community Trust Board, Senior Staff, students and parents.

Madrid Helu is the son of Sosaia and Amelia Helu, both New Zealand graduates and business owners in Tonga.

 

Scholarships help tip the balance for Pacific women

RNZ reports the public sector is the largest single employer of women across the Pacific but the research presented to a Commonwealth gathering in Apia on Wednesday shows they are significantly under-represented in the top jobs.

Papua New Guinea reported only 7 percent of its senior government roles were held by women but Samoa, Tonga and Kiribati were performing well with up to 50 percent, according to Nicole Haley of the Australian National University.

Scholarships for fisheries officer certificates

They will be studying towards the Pacific Island Fisheries Officer Certificate at Nelson Malborough Institute of Technology.

The course provides practical skills in fishing techniques, equipment maintenance, sustainable fisheries management and compliance.
