Serena eyes Aussie return

The 23-times grand slam winner announced her pregnancy in April and will be on maternity leave for the rest of the year. The 35-year-old is engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.

"It's the most outrageous plan," Williams told Vogue magazine. "I just want to put that out there. That's, like, three months after I give birth. I'm not walking anything back, but I'm just saying it's pretty intense.

"If I lose and I lose again, it's like, 'she's done'. Especially since I'm not 20 years old. I'll tell you this much: I won't win less. Either I win, or I don't play."

Serena Williams' 1950s baby shower

The 36-year-old and her celebrity friends threw a massive party on Saturday to celebrate her impending baby, and the theme was 1950s.

However, Serena and her squad, including the likes of Ciara, Eva Longoria, La La Anthony and Kelly Rowland, ended up looking like extras from the Grease movie as they partied at Nick's Diner in Florida.

Dressed in '50s garb, wearing black-and-white saddle shoes and a yellow poodle skirt, Serena was the toast of the party. Her sister, Venus was also there and in costume as well.

McEnroe refuses to apologise for Serena Williams comments

McEnroe hit the headlines following an NPR interview over the weekend when he said, "If [Williams] played the men's circuit she’d be like 700 in the world."

His comments came after the host, Lulu Garcia-Navarro, said Williams could be seen as the "best player in the world" instead of the "best female player."

Reaction to what McEnroe said has been strong, but when given the chance to apologise Tuesday on "CBS This Morning," the legendary seven-time major champion did not back down.

The American, 35, is due to give birth in the autumn, says her representative.

The world number two posted a picture on social media app Snapchat, posing in a mirror with the message: "20 weeks", before deleting it.

If accurate, that would mean Williams was around eight weeks pregnant while winning in Melbourne.

Williams will miss the rest of the season, having not played since the Australian Open, citing a knee injury.

Williams to forfeit top ranking

Williams only returned to the top ranking in January after claiming a record 23rd grand slam singles title at the Australian Open.

"Sadly, I have to withdraw from the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open," Williams said in a statement.

"I have not been able to train due to my knees and am disappointed I cannot be there. I will keep moving forward and continue to be positive. I look forward to being back as soon as I can."

Serena beats Venus to win record 23rd major

When Serena beat her older sibling in the Australian Open final 6-4 6-4, she collected a 23rd grand slam title to surpass Steffi Graf for the Open Era lead.

Now she only trails all-time leader Margaret Court by one major and the way she played in Melbourne -- not dropping a set -- Serena, 35, is looking good to achieve that feat later in 2017.

"It's never enough, 23, 24, 25," Serena told the crowd after her win. "I felt like I really elevated my game this year."

Shock loss: Serena Williams makes early exit

RNZ reports the world number two and top seed lost to Brengle, who is ranked 72 in the world, 4-6 7-6 4-6 in a see-saw second-round contest.

The final blow came as a double fault on a match point.

At a post-match news conference, Williams said the swirling wind had been a major factor for her.

"I really think I played - I'm trying to think of a word that's not 'obscene', but that's pretty much how I played. Eighty-eight unforced errors is too much ... just way too many unforced errors.
