IS rocket attack kills Turkish soldiers in Syria

Another five soldiers were wounded in a rocket attack on Turkish tanks, the military said in a statement.

The fatalities are believed to be the first since Turkey launched its operation inside Syria two weeks ago.

Two fighters from the Free Syrian Army were also killed and another two injured in the attack.

"Two of our hero comrades were martyred and five were wounded in a rocket attack on two of our tanks by Daesh (IS) elements," the army statement said.

The rocket attack was launched near the village of al-Waqf, it added.

France's super jihadi and the teenage girl trapped in Syria

Only the camouflage t-shirt and the tent walls billowing around him offer a hint that this is no ordinary workplace, but the epicenter of jihadi recruitment in Syria.

The clip he's working on is not a pop video or newsreel but a piece of radical Islamist propaganda, in praise of the "Charlie Hebdo" attackers who killed 12 people in Paris in January 2015.

Omsen -- a.k.a. Omar Diaby -- is France's "super jihadist."

Fighting rages in Syrian city of Aleppo

Over the weekend, the rebels tried to reconnect an encircled area in the east with insurgent territory in the west.

They set off a huge tunnel bomb underneath army positions in the strategic Ramouseh district.

The army has been fighting back with the help of Russian air strikes to stop the rebels breaking through.

Around a quarter of a million civilians are living under siege in rebel-held areas since government forces cut them off last month.

Rebels in Syria call boy's beheading a 'mistake'

The video that emerged on social media showed a visibly frightened boy lying in the back of a truck alongside what appeared to be several rebel fighters.

The rebels claimed the boy was a prisoner from Liwa al-Quds -- a pro-regime militia force made up mostly of Palestinians in Syria -- and that he was captured from an unofficial refugee camp north of war-torn Aleppo.

The footage then shows one of the men taking a knife to the child's head. The boy appears to be quite young, perhaps around 10, though CNN cannot verify his age or identity.

Pokemon's tears for Syria

For many watching from a distance, the shock value of reports about the aftermath of barrel bombs, suicide attacks, torture and starving civilians can diminish with repetition.

One tactic that some Syrian activists are deploying to try to shortcut this is to tap into the global phenomenon that is Pokemon Go and to exploit it for all it's worth.

Pikachus, squirtles and weedles and the other characters in the augmented reality game have been unofficially co-opted to highlight the harsh realities of war.

He said seven attackers had been killed, and that all had been heavily armed and wearing explosive belts.

Obama rejects Russian approach to ending Syrian war

Obama made his remarks at a White House news conference Friday.

The president called Russia's military involvement, including airstrikes that began this week, a self-defeating exercise that will move the Syrian conflict further from a solution.

Russia defends its military action in Syria

The claim of agreement with Washington came amid conflicting reports about Russia's intentions in Syria and whether it is targeting only Islamic State and al-Qaida-linked militants.

The U.S. and its allies fear that Russia, which has backed the family of President Bashar Assad since the current leader's father was in power, is using the air campaign as a pretext to go after anti-Assad rebels that include CIA-backed groups.
