The race was one of the most open in years, missing the U.S. team that have dominated the event for decades but failed to make the final following a ragged run that saw them finish sixth in their semi-final.

The Azzurri took the opportunity with both hands, picking up their fifth gold from track and field at this year's Games after triumphs in the men's 100m and long jump and the double in 20 kilometres walk.

The American left the arena after the vault, but later returned to support her team-mates as they claimed silver behind the Russian Olympic Committee.

Biles, 24, scored 13.766 - her lowest Olympic vault score - before withdrawing from the event.

"After the performance I did, I just didn't want to go on," she said.

"I have to focus on my mental health. I just think mental health is more prevalent in sports right now.

"We have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just go out and do what the world wants us to do.

The Games, scheduled to start in July, were postponed for a year in March because of fears over the Covid-19 pandemic.

Tokyo 2020 chief executive Toshiro Muto added that the Olympics will "not be done with grand splendour".

Organisers said that they are working on more than 200 ideas to simplify and reduce costs for the rescheduled Games.

Muto, speaking at a news conference, also revealed that the organisers had not ruled out reducing the number of fans, although the competition schedule remained unchanged for now.

The two-time gold medal winner in the women's shot put at the Olympic Games will attempt to add another gong to her collection at Tokyo later this year after giving birth to her second child in March last year.

The 35-year-old will compete at the Allan and Sylvia Potts Memorial Classic in Hawke's Bay this weekend, with Adams hoping to be closer to her best form at the Sir Graeme Douglas International in West Auckland in late February.

The Japanese public will be asked to donate old phones and small appliances to gather two tonnes of gold, silver and bronze for the 5,000 medals.

The project hopes to promote sustainability and reduce costs.

"A project that allows the people of Japan to take part in creating the medals is really good," said Tokyo 2020 sports director Koji Murofushi.

"There's a limit on the resources of our earth, so recycling these things will make us think about the environment."
