74-year-old US man found dead on yacht in Tonga

Kaniva News reports the health authority at Ngū Hospital confirmed the deceased died from a heart attack.

Tongan authorities were making contact with the US Embassy in Fiji to decide whether the deceased’s body would be flown home to California or they would bury it in Vavaʻu, Police Superintend Nētane Falakiseni said.

The deceased arrived in Vavaʻu in October 2015 and his visa expired in November this year, Falakiseni said.

He said the deceased’s yacht was docked at Vaipua slip ready to be taken inland as hurricane season approached.

Tonga police issue warning following two separate drowning reports

Deputy Commissioner Pelenatita Fe’ao Vaisuai says being safety conscious takes a little time but ensures a life time of fun in, on or under the water.

Vaisuai issued the statement as police investigate two drowning cases reported this week.

A nine year old boy, who was swimming with a group of people at the causeway between Tu’anekivale and Holeva in Vava’u died on Wednesday.

Police say the child’s body was taken to Ngu Hospital where doctors was confirmed a case of drowning.

Man charged with attempted suicide in Tonga

A Police Chief Superintendent Tevita Vailea said police arrested the man on Tuesday morning after his mother reported the incident.

According to RNZ, Mr Vailea said the number of attempted suicides was slowly rising in Tonga and there was a need for more mental health and anger management support for young people.

He said it was not the first time police had charged someone for attempted suicide, and the community must be made aware of the suicidal attitudes that exist.

Tonga priest says proactive work will end domestic violence

Data from a study by the Ma'a Fafine mo e Famili organisation released in 2012 showed 77 percent of women had experienced physical or sexual violence.

It also said churches have an important role to play in changing attitudes.

Marist priest Father Seluini 'Akau'ola who blessed the launch of a 16 day-anti violence campaign last month, said their role was more than just preaching at people.

Government shuts down Tokomololo and Ngeleʻia Side Schools

Ngeleʻia and Tokomololo Side Schools will merge with Tonga Side School in Nukuʻalofa.

Kaniva News reports the shutdown is expected to save the government’s budget and resources so it can improve running the school.

Tonga Side School was established decades ago in a bid to teach foreign children in English on Tongan curriculum with a palangi perspective.

The only Tongan children allowed to enrol were those of the royals and the nobility.

Road safety campaign held in Nuku’alofa

Acting CEO of the Ministry of Infrastructure Kisione Taufa says this rate is more than twice the international rate of death which is 6.

According to Radio Tonga, Kisione said, one life is estimated to cost about TOP$28 million worldwide, then we witness the sum of money that Tonga loses with the number of deaths on the road rising to a record high when the year is not yet over.

Kisione made the comments at a public hearing at Tuivakano Polutele Hall in Nukunuku this week.

Tonga’s economy likely to grow by 2.6%

Radio Tonga reports it includes natural disasters such as tropical cyclones, large increase in spending and cost overruns in Tonga’s preparation for the 2019 Pacific Games – that could weaken the fiscal sustainability and raise public debt.

This is according to report from the Asian Development Bank – ADB.

Economic forecasts show that while the Tongan economy is expected to grow by 3.1% in the current financial year, it will not maintain that growth rate.

ADB stated the Tongan economy for the 2017 Financial Year will grow by only 2.6%.

Missing Tongan man and son found

RNZ reports the 40-year-old man and his 14-year-old son from 'Eua went on a fishing trip on Saturday 10 December.

The pair were in a 14ft boat and left about 5:30am local time.

Tonga Police said they last made contact by mobile phone on Saturday evening advising of engine problems.

A Marine Search and Rescue operation was launched but was unsuccessful prompting police to request help from New Zealand.

A Royal New Zealand Airforce Orion left New Zealand at 9am and has found the missing fishermen.
