Tearful Kefu says grateful to be alive after violent attack

The 47-year-old, who played 60 tests for the Wallabies around the turn of the century, wiped away tears as he revealed details of the home invasion by knife-wielding teenagers in the early hours of Monday morning.

"I'm just grateful that we all got out, we're alive. Might be a little bit of damage moving forward but we're still breathing," Kefu, wearing a large patch on his right forearm, told reporters outside his home in Brisbane on Friday.

The former Wallaby and three of his family members were attacked at their Coorparoo home in Brisbane at about 3:00am on Monday.

Police said the attack was carried out with an axe, a knife and a machete.

Mr Kefu suffered serious injuries and was hospitalised with wounds to his abdomen.

His wife, son and daughter also sustained injuries and underwent surgery.

The alleged offenders – three boys aged 15 and one boy aged 13 – have been arrested and charged with 11 offences each.

The World Cup winning Wallabies great came through a prolonged period of surgery, and the hope is that he, his wife, and two adult children, who all suffered injuries during the attack at their home in Brisbane, will make a full recovery.

But in the mean time the TRU's Chief Executive, Peter Harding, is working on his options for Tonga's forthcoming trip to the northern hemisphere, which is just a couple of months away.

The local boy has been charged with four counts of attempted murder, three counts of assault causing grievous bodily harm and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, burglary and deprivation of liberty.

He was refused bail to appear in Brisbane Children’s Court.

A second teenager remains under arrest while the third alleged attacker is still on the loose.

The former back rower was at home when three people broke into his family home in Coorparoo at 3am on Monday morning.

According to Channel 7, Kefu was stabbed in the stomach after the family confronted the men and a brawl erupted.

Seven ambulance crews attended the scene and he was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital and is in a serious condition with abdominal wounds.

He has been in surgery all morning.

Kefu’s wife, son and daughter were injured during the frenzy and were also taken to hospital.
