CEO for MEIDECC, Paula Pouvalu Ma’u received two 20-foot containers generously through the Neptune Pacific Direct Line Company on Wednesday.

The containers carry in total 2422 drinking water bottles (1 and 1.5 litre bottles).

The donation is to assist with the Government’s relief efforts, in response to the Hunga Tonga –Hunga Ha’apai volcanic eruption and tsunami on 15 January 2022.

Neptune’s local agent in Tonga, Transam Tonga’s General Manager, Joe Paasi presented the donation.

That’s the real-life challenge facing a group of University of Canterbury (UC) final-year Chemical and Process Engineering (CAPE) students for their team design project.

The team of four needs to create an economically viable plan for a small-scale plant to desalinate and sterilise drinking water. It should be powered by renewable resources since the village – a real place called Felemea – only has electricity for two hours each day and diesel is expensive.

The finding makes the world - which is called K2-18b - a plausible candidate in the search for alien life.

Within 10 years, new space telescopes might be able to determine whether K2-18b's atmosphere contains gases that could be produced by living organisms.

Details were published in the scientific journal Nature Astronomy.

The lead scientist, Prof Giovanna Tinetti of University College London (UCL) described the discovery as "mind blowing".

A sample of tap water in the town of Hugo was taken and results indicated the presence of THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects.
