Tonga’s Health Director urges people to be cautious as temperatures soar

Director of Health Dr. Siale ‘Akauola has urged the public to be more cautious during extremely hot days.

He highlighted the need to pay extra attention to the elderlies, people living with disabilities, young children, foreigners visiting Tonga and people diagnosed with diabetes.

According to Radio Tonga, Dr. ‘Akauola said during these humid days these groups of people are at risk and vulnerable to dehydration.

He urged the public to cover their bodies from the sun by wearing hats, using umbrellas, use sun screen and to drink lots of water.

He also highlighted the need for growers and carpenters to be more careful while working in the sun.

A spokesperson for Tonga’s Meteorology Office said, Wednesday 11th of January had the warmest temperature recorded at 33 degree Celsius.

On Tuesday the temperature was at the average of 32.

The temperature prediction for this week is between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius..

This week is one of the warmest weeks compared to last year with the warmest temperature recorded at 30.8 in Tongatapu.

Laitia Fifita from MET office said 30 years ago the warmest temperature was at the average 29.4 degrees Celsius.
