Tonga Legislative Assembly to open

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga will open for the first time today since the general election in November last year.

The session will be opened with the commissioning of three Nobles comprising of HSH Prince Tu’ipelehake, Lord Fakatulolo and Lord Luani.

The new Members of Parliament will take their oath of office on the first sitting of Parliament on a date yet to be announced.

One of the commission will speak on behalf of King Tupou VI and then the Speaker will nominate two MPs to submit the House's reply.

Parliament's first sitting day will be confirmed once the King can attend.

It is unclear whether Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva will attend the soft opening as he has been in the Intensive Care Unit at Vaiola Hospital for the past few days with an undisclosed illness.

The last parliament was dissolved by the King and Tonga went to the polls in November.

Pohiva’s Democratic Party won the election and he was re-elected Prime Minister.
