More than 205 police officers from all over Tonga have been deployed to several areas as part of Tonga Police Christmas operation.

The police officers will cover checkpoints, beat and patrol to ensure the safety of public and their properties.

Tevita Vailea – Acting Chief Superintendent of Nuku’alofa Station told Radio Tonga News the operation is called Operation VI.

Vailea says their focus is to inspect public areas, festive celebrations, national events and to also remain accountable to the public’s needs 24/7.

This end of year special operation was put in place to reduce consumption of alcohol during the festive season.

“This annual operation aims to ensure that public are safe together with their properties during the Christmas season. All Police stations all over Tonga works and in full operation during the holidays. They will enforce law and order in the public areas, transportation and prevent consuming alcohol when driving and even in public areas,” Vailea said.

He says despite their efforts to provide the very best, lack of human power and resources have become a challenge and so the public’s help is much needed.

Operation VI was named after a senior Police officer who died while serving in ‘Eua this year.

The operation will end on January 3rd 2017.
