Tonga receives aquaculture equipment from Japan

Japan has donated aquaculture equipment to the Ministry of Fisheries in Tonga.

The set of equipment includes diving computers, underwater cameras and tally counters.

Japan's Ambassador  Kensaku Munenaga presented the equipment to the Minister of Fisheries Lord Fohe.

A government statement said, “”This assistance is the first batch of a USD$1.5 milion under Japan's Non-Project Grant Aid signed in May this year with the Ministry.”

“Additional batches are expected to arrive next year, from pickup trucks to research boats and other equipment.”

Ambassador Munenaga said, "Since the disaster, the people and the Government of Japan have been supporting Tonga in various ways. Apart from the emergency relief assistances at the initial stage provided by our Self-Defence Force, today's assistance aims to provide necessary things for the long-term development of the fisheries industries."

He said Japan has contributed to the development of Tonga's fishery since the 1970’s.
