Visiting Tongan man attacked in Auckland CBD remains in critical condition

A man on holiday from Tonga remains in a critical condition in Auckland City Hospital after he was assaulted in the CBD.

The 42-year-old received serious head injuries in the assault, which occurred on Kitchener St around 3.40am on Saturday, a police spokeswoman said.

Taranaki Daily News reports Police have reissued an appeal on Monday for witnesses to come forward.

The cause of his injuries was not yet known, the spokeswoman said.

The man was seen walking down the middle of Kitchener St, obstructing the flow of traffic, when a car stopped and "words were exchanged" between the victim and the occupants of the car.

A short time afterwards, the car drove off at speed and the victim was left lying on the ground, the spokeswoman said.

The man had been due to leave New Zealand in a fortnight. His wife was flying to Auckland to support him.

Police are appealing to the people in the car for information about the incident, and are also asking people who saw the altercation to contact police.

Several members of the public had already come forward with information.
