Mataitonga family helps refurbish school in memory of late mother

Students of Tonga Government Primary School will return to a refurbished building in the new year.

The refurbishment is a project of the Mataitonga family in honour of their late mother, Akanesi.

The project was established in the UK and last week, Frazer Mataitonga was in the country to check on the progress of the refurbishment.

Frazer explained the project is a legacy he and his siblings want to leave behind in memory of their mother.

“Our mom was a very strong supporter of education. It was very important to her. She always said kids, no matter where you’ll land and end up in the future, always remember your roots and remember to give back what your childhood, youth and adulthood have given you. But most of all remember your community and help the upcoming youth. They are the future of the nation so help them with their education in any way you can.’

So we had helped with some materials for the inside classroom like reading materials, books and pens and now we are doing the refurbishment but we are also hoping that we could start a scholarship club to fund the financial needs of those who can’t afford to pay their tuition and so forth,” said Frazer.

He said this is the only way they are letting their mother’s words live on and they are helping those in their community in Tonga with their education in the best way the can.
