Tonga yet to commence construction of facilities for 2019 Pacific Games

Construction of facilities for the 2019 Pacific Games is yet to begin in Tonga.

The government is also yet to receive monetary assistance from both China and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Currently, the Government is occupied with designing the map and plans for the stadium but China has confirmed that all the construction funded by its Government will be completed in 2018.

Deputy Director of Sports Division under the Ministry of Internal Affairs – Mr. ‘Onetoto ‘Ānisi told Radio Tonga News they’re yet to receive the monetary pledge from China and PNG but the assistance will pour in soon as agreed.

This includes the TOP$40 million pledged from China and TOP$10 million promised by PNG.

Out of all the 26 sporting facilities in Tonga, most will be situated at Nuku’alofa behind the Nuku’alofa Government Primary School.

Mr Anisi adds there’s a slight change where they will soon commence with the renovation of Teufaiva Park for the games hosted by Tonga between the ‘Ikale Tahi team and the Australian national team which is yet to be confirmed.

The renovation is planned to be completed in March next year.

However Mr. ‘Ānisi assured Radio Tonga the construction work will be completed ahead of its schedule.
