Tonga's best athletes in Fiji for Melanesian Games

The Kingdom of Tonga will be represented by four of its best athletes at the Melanesian Games tomorrow.

Two of the four athletes will also competing in the Olympic Games next month in Rio De Jainero.

The team consists of three men and a woman athlete.

The lone woman in the squad Taina Halasima will be pairing up with Siueni Filimone to represent Tonga at the Olympic Games.

Team manager Palu Havea said the two have qualified for the Olympic Games on wild card entries and had set their goals on improving their personal bests at the Melanesian Games before they leave Tonga for Rio.

"Training has been tough and the athletes are all set to compete in the games," Havea said.

"We've had to foot our own bills coming here, so that is kind of a motivational factor for the athletes knowing how hard everyone back at home worked to get them to come over."

Havea said as much as they had wanted to field a big team for the Melanesian Games, financial constraints were the biggest issue for them.

"This is the only four that could pay for their fare, but that has not deterred us from going to give in our best," she said.

She said they're hoping to bag medals in the 100m boys, 110m hurdles and maybe the 400m events.

Tonga's four athletes are Halasima, Filimone, Heamatangi Tuivai and Larry Sulunga.

The Melanesian Games will feature 12 nations competing including Australia and New Zealand.

The games will start tomorrow and will end on Saturday
