King to open fresh session of Tongan parliament

Today the King of Tonga will open this morning what promises to be a dramatic session of parliament.

Earlier this week Opposition MPs warned that efforts to remove Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva would be ramped up.

His Majesty King Tupou VI officially opens the parliamentary session with his address from the throne. The king publicly comments on the workings of parliament and the government.

RNZI reports his speech will be followed by a House reply which will be formulated by committee before being delivered in the coming days. Once that reply is given, the House can then sit.

Budget deliberations are first up on the parliamentary schedule which could prove interesting given talk from the Opposition of possibly blocking the budget and confusion over whether the country has the finances to fund the hosting of the 2019 Pacific Games.

Mr Pohiva had pulled Tonga out of hosting the Games, citing economic reasons, despite successive finance ministers saying the money had already been allocated.
