Legal action against Tonga for Pacific Games withdrawal

The Tongan Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) together with the Pacific Games Council are planning to face-off against the Tongan government in court, after Tonga withdrew its hosting rights for the 2019 Pacific Games.

The Kingdom won the bid to in 2012 before withdrawing their hosting rights earlier this year due to financial reasons.

Pacific Games Council CEO Andrew Minogue says dealing with Tonga's withdrawal has cost them a lot of money.

"The additional costs that the council has had to incur in going through this process of finding a new host and the damage to the brand and the lost opportunity with potential sponsors and so forth."

PRN reports Minogue believes the Tongan government also owes TASANOC money as a result of the withdrawal.

"There were three parties to that contract: the Pacific Games Council, TASANOC and the government," he says. "There are two parties that will take a joint action against the government."

He says from this experience, the council will now consider the hosting rights more carefully.

"We will look at the contract and the process about awarding the games and who can bid for them, what sort of facilities and resources they have to demonstrate they have in place, before they can lodge a bid."

Samoa now has the hosting rights for the 2019 Pacific Games.
