Tonga and Fiji prepare as Cyclone Ella approaches

Tonga's northern most island group is in preparing and Fiji police are urging the public to take heed of the weather advisories as Cyclone Ella approaches both countries.

The cyclone is moving past the northernmost islands of Tonga before reaching northeastern Fiji tomorrow.

Tonga's National Emergency Management Office director Leveni 'Aho said emergency services are on standby in the Niuas, where up to 700 people are living.

He said while there were no reports of damage as yet, locals were preparing for tonight when the storm will be at its closest.

"Get their fuel and batteries and radio and things like that. The normal things we do in preparation for cyclones. At this stage it is a category one, we just hope it would not escalate from that but that is pretty much where we are, trying to get all the other emergency services on standby now, ready to deploy if required."

Meanwhile, Fiji's Police Chief of Operations Rusiate Tudravu told FBC News with strong wind warnings in place for Fiji waters as well as the possibility of heavy rain and flash flooding in low lying areas, people need to take the necessary precautions.

The cyclone is predicted to strengthen to a category 2 storm tomorrow and turn south into the northern Lau group on Friday.

Earlier today a heavy rain warning was in effect for Samoa after the country's weather authorities warned flooding was possible in vulnerable areas as the storm passed.

The Samoan Disaster Management Office said landslides were possible and people living on land that could be affected should consider moving to safer areas.

Meanwhile, alerts have been lifted and many schools have reopened in New Caledonia as Cyclone Donna passed the Loyalty Islands further east than forecast.
