Tributes pour in for alleged assault victim

Relatives and friends of Keuli Malakai, who died after he was allegedly assaulted early Saturday morning in Tonga, have been paying tribute to him through the social networks.

Malakai was allegedly assaulted by a 25 year old man around 1am Saturday near ‘Ahopanilolo Technical College in Ma’ufanga.

Kaniva News reports police have arrested the suspect.

Relatives of Malakai said words could not describe him.

One family member said, “Keuli had a massive heart and wore a smile that lit up the lives of those he knew.”

Malakai was walking on the road. The accused who was in a vehicle saw him and allegedly got off and assaulted him, resulting in severe injuries including some to his head. Alcohol is reported to have been a factor in this offence.

Acting Police Chief Superintendent Tevita Vailea said others who were in the vehicle got off and stopped the accused and rushed Malakai to Vaiola Hospital. He died on the same morning.

The accused who turned himself in to police remains detained in custody as investigation continues, said Vailea.
