UN agencies meet with Government of Tonga

The Government of Tonga and UN agencies meeting this morning provided both parties the opportunity to touch base and get a better understanding of how things are, especially with projects being implemented here in Tonga with UN support and funding.

Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni chaired the meeting at the UN Agencies Office at Royco Building in Nuku'alofa.

UNICEF's Deputy Representative in Suva, also serving Tonga, Ms Vatinee Jitjaturunt joined the meeting with UN's Tonga Office Manager Milika Tuita.

Government Ministries represented at the meeting included the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food; Ministry of Fisheries; Ministry of Health; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Internal Affairs; Ministry of Finance and National Planning and the Ministry of MEIDECC.

Part of the Ministry of MEIDECC's presentation was on the Tonga Ridge to Reef project, which is the first to be implemented in the Pacific.

MEIDECC Chief Executive Officer Paula Ma'u presented the R2R update report, with DPM Sovaleni asking the UN Agencies for an update on whether there is any plans to have Phase 2 of the project and is yes when that is likely to be implemented.
