Water tests conducted at Tonga’s new domestic wharf

The Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) unit at Tonga’s Department of Environment is continuing to test and monitor waters in and around the new Domestic Wharf on the Ma’ufanga waterfront.

EIA Officer Kosilio Faka’osi was on site again yesterday to carry out the testing with staff of TOA Construction, who are working on the Japan Government funded project.

Results showed that no sediments have leaked into the seas in and around the wharf area, with the sealed cotton enclosure providing sufficient protection at the moment.

The new wharf is expected to be completed at the end of the year with the opening scheduled for early next year.

It will become the main domestic wharf in Nuku’alofa, with a modern art passenger terminal which will house cafeterias, meeting rooms and a waiting lounge.

The passenger terminal is currently being constructed on the site.
