Tonga looks forward to a new domestic wharf

The Government and people of Tonga are looking forward to the construction of a new and broad domestic wharf next month.

This is part of the assistance of the Government of Japan to the people of Tonga through the bilateral relations.

Government officials including the CEO for Infrastructure and the Minister for Public Enterprises were in Japan last month to exchange signatory with the construction group that will be working on building the new wharf for Tonga.

CEO of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Mr. Pesalili Tu‘iano says that Door Construction will be the Group responsible for the whole construction project.

“The Policy of the Government of Japan towards signing of contracts like these especially as it’s one of their financial aids, that it must always be signed in Japan.

That being done, we are looking at what to begin with so the Manager and some of the consultants of the Door Construction arrives and we’ll be having a meeting on Thursday so we may look into our next step and where we’ll go from there.”

Mr. Pesalili stated that they’ll be looking to set the date where Door Construction will start with the construction project next month in their Thursday meeting.

He also says that the tools and resources for the construction will also be confirmed on Thursday whether it be provided from the Kingdom or from Japan depending on their work and the things that might not be found in Tonga.

Meanwhile, operations of the current wharf will continue when construction will begin.

The new domestic wharf is expected to provide enough space to dock two ferries.

A terminal for the new wharf is also included in this project.

Mr. Pesalili says that they are looking to use the terminal for the waiting passengers to board the ferries at the new wharf also those at the wharf to travel to ‘Eua.

The Government of Japan is aiding this construction project with $32 million.

This project is presumed to be completed by December.
