Digicel supports first ever local Kingdom 7s tournament

Tonga’s leading communications and entertainment provider, Digicel Tonga Limited today announced details of its support in partnership with UNWomen for the first ever local Sevens Rugby Tournament – The Kingdom 7’s.

The tournament is scheduled to be held on 6th and 7th October, 2017 in Tongatapu and is aimed to bring together Sevens Rugby players both male and females from around the country to play in this two-day event.   

This announcement today emphasised Digicel’s commitment and support to Tonga Rugby and the development of the Sport amongst the people of Tonga.   

Commenting at the official launch, Ben Kealy, CEO of Digicel Tonga said, “The Kingdom 7s Tournament is aimed to not only showcase the rugby talent we have in the country, but also to develop and foster local players for both men and women at a national level.  This tournament will provide the perfect opportunity for International Clubs to see local talent at play.”    

Chairperson of the Kingdom 7’s Organising Committee, Vanessa Heleta said, “We are delighted to have Digicel on board as our major sponsor for this first ever event as it speaks volume of their commitment to Tonga Rugby and allows us to also educate both our men and women on the importance of equal opportunities where Rugby is concerned.” Ms Heleta went onto say that: “The tournament will help the Committee establish a database of all Tongan 7’s rugby players whether male or female and is critical to the selection process of the country’s National 7s Teams at the International Sevens Rugby Series.   

The UN Tonga Office Representative, Milika Tuita said, “ The UNWomen Office is proud to co-fund the Kingdom 7s tournament alongside Digicel, as the event is pivotal in adding momentum towards the implementation of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieving Gender Equality and Empowering Women and Girls.”  

In concluding, Mr Kealy expressed his sincere appreciation to Ms. Heleta and her Committee for their time, effort and great initiative in organising such an event and commend the UNWomen Office for the partnership to support the tournament
