Fiji assistant police commissioner under investigation, sent on leave

This has been confirmed to FBC News by Acting Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho. Qiliho says it’s too early to talk about what the allegation is –only mentioning that it is serious in nature.

Fiji police probe suspected mail theft

FBC News says a 52-year-old senior manager was questioned and released after police recovered a bag of unclaimed mail at his farm house.

It says police are expected to question and interrogate the head of Postal Services of Post Fiji over the matter.

The senior manager remains suspended as investigations continue.

     

More flag delays in Fiji

This comes after Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama delayed the process by six months in June.

In a statement the government says it has now received new submissions since it released 23 designs earlier this year, but is still seeking more.

Last of Fijian group arrested on sedition charges bailed

FBC New reports these were the last of the accused who had been remanded in custody after being arrested three months ago.

Twenty of the 42 accused were granted bail two weeks ago.

They are on bail bonds of US$464 and directed to report to the nearest police stations each Saturday and Monday.

Seven people escape after helicopter crash in Fiji

A Eurocopter crashed as it attempted to land on Treasure Island, Fiji Broadcasting Corporation reported.

It was apparently caught by a strong gust of wind.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) said there were seven people on board at the time, including the pilot, but there were no fatalities.

More water for drought stricken Fiji's Western division

The provision of tanks was made possible with support from the €19.36 million (US$21.12 million) European Union Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific (BSRP) project which is implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC).

These tanks will be installed in temporary roadside locations filled by the National Disaster Management Office throughout the Christmas season to ensure the most severely affected areas can access clean and safe drinking water, which is critical to human health.

Beddoes quits Fiji opposition administration

Beddoes has left his position as the principal administration officer at the Office of the Leader of Opposition for what he describes as personal reasons.

He says his decision to step down does not mean his support for Ro Teimumu Kepa will end.

Beddoes says the Sodelpa headquarters needs a big shake-up to replace most of the deadwood there.

Akauola confirmed that he will not be resigning his role as a media specialist for the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC)

He has also confirmed that he has received confirmation from the Fijian Electoral Commission. 

“I now await confirmation from the Speaker of the House and I am ready to offer my experience and be sure to assist government in moving our country forward.”

USP student makes impressive find

Froseann Stevens, a USP biology student who found this endemic species, is working on her project in collaboration with LäjeRotuma Initiative (LRI), a community-based environmental education and awareness development programme.

USP’s Associate Professor Gilianne Brodie, who is also the project leader, said this is a finding of great scientific interest at the international-level because of the tragic extinction history of related tree snail species in other Pacific Island countries, primarily as a result of invasive species.

Fiji to negotiate Air Service Agreement with India

Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum revealed over the weekend that a team from India will be in Fiji in January 2016 to carry out talks over the ASA.

“Hopefully they’ll be down here in the middle of January. We need to finalize that because India is now the second largest outbound market in the world and in the next five to ten years will be the largest outbound market. So, Fiji having a direct flight to Singapore means we need to level of connectivity with India vis-à-vis Singapore.”
