The Lion King hits $1bn box office mark

The Disney remake of the 1994 classic has achieved the feat less than three weeks after being released in cinemas.

The movie, which features the voices of Beyonce and Donald Glover, joins Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel and Aladdin in Disney's $1bn class of 2019.

As reported by Variety, director Jon Favreau's version is already the fifth-biggest global release of of the year.

In North America, it has racked up sales of around $361m (£267m) and $638m (£324m) overseas, with cinema-goers in China and Brazil leading the way.

 The idea of Donald Glover ( also known as Childish Gambino) as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, and Chiwetel Ejofor as the villainous Scar already had many excited.

These new photos ramp up fan anticipation a gear by depicting the cast facing the computer animated characters they help bring to life.

A TV legend front and center in an adaptation with a modern twist, and an adorable lion cub were the stars of the live-action presentation at Disney's D23 event, at which the studio unveiled multiple highly anticipated sneak peeks on Saturday.

Among the most anticipated first looks was that for "Star Wars: The Last Jedi."

Director Rian Johnson was joined by cast members Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro to show a new behind-the-scenes featurette with looks at the upcoming film.
