Michael Jordan's $16m 60th birthday surprise

It is the largest donation ever received from an individual in the organisation's' 43-year history.

Jordan's hope is that his decision to celebrate his birthday on Saturday (NZT) by donating to Make-A-Wish will inspire others to help fulfil the wishes of the kids still waiting for their wishes to come true.

“For the past 34 years, it's been an honour to partner with Make-A-Wish and help bring a smile and happiness to so many kids,'' Jordan said in a news release.

Michael Jordan: NBA legend's trainers sell for record $560,000

The Nike Air Jordan 1s, worn by Jordan during his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls, were expected to fetch between $100,00-$150,000 at Sotheby's.

The previous record was $437,500 for a pair of Nike's 1972 Moon Shoes.

Jordan wore mismatched trainers, with the left a size 13 and the right a size 13.5.

The Air Jordan 1s were sold by Jordan Geller, who founded the trainer museum Shoezeum in Las Vegas.

The sale coincided with a Netflix documentary - The Last Dance - with behind-the-scenes footage of the Bulls' hunt for a sixth NBA title in the 1997-98 season.

Ever since James was dunking on fellow teenagers, pundits have been linking the superstar to Jordan, but it may not be an apt comparison after all.

James, speaking ahead of Thursday's game against the Boston Celtics, poured water on the hype linking him to the great Bulls legend who won six NBA championships.

"No, [Jordan] was much more of a scorer, at that point did a lot of post work, but our games are just different," James said via Cavs.com .

Michael Jordan tells jury he values his image 'preciously'

It's been determined that Dominick's used Jordan's image without permission in a 2009 ad. A Chicago federal court jury must determine how much Dominick's owner must pay for the transgression.

Michael Jordan in court for trial on his brand value

Tuesday's trial in Chicago federal court stems from a lawsuit the six-time NBA champion brought against a grocery-store chain for the unauthorized use his name and persona in an ad.

The 52-year-old is expected to testify. He'll likely discuss why he tightly controls his image and why he believes the now-defunct Dominick's Finer Foods undermined it.

A judge previously found Dominick's invoked Jordan's identity without permission. The only unresolved issue is damages.
