The Cooks, which had been ruled by New Zealand from 1901, in 1965 became self governing in free association with New Zealand.

Mr Key says, at that time, both countries entered into a unique bilateral relationship.

He says New Zealand welcomes the opportunity to celebrate that and to reflect on an important partnership based on shared values, history, and the positive contribution Cook Islanders make to New Zealand.

Auckland general practice plans for satellite clinic in Tonga

The aim is not only to address health issues at an early stage but to also alleviate the potential “economic and disease burden” on New Zealand once they arrive here, chief executive Glenn Doherty says.

At present, the society runs an outreach clinic in Tonga around two times a year and Dr Doherty sees the satellite general practice as a “natural progression”.

Following a 2-0 semi-final win against Vanuatu on Friday (July 10), New Zealand's opponents protested the eligibility of South African-born Deklan Wynne.

The protest was upheld at a disciplinary hearing Sunday as Vanuatu were handed a 3-0 walkover, putting them through to the final against Fiji later in the day. 

Vanuatu lost 4-3 on penalties here following a goalless draw after extra-time at the Sir Hubert Murray Stadium.
