Legendary basketball coach dies

McKean was at the helm of the Tall Blacks from 1972-1981 and led the team to their first ever win over Australia in 1978.

He started his New Zealand basketball career with the Auckland Club, Panmure, after arriving from the USA over 50 years ago.

He was an NBL coach for nine years, during that time he was notably the coach of the first team in the NBL to win 100 games.

Steven Adams won't play for Tall Blacks

Last week Adams was named in an extended squad of 25 for the September tournament, but at the time Basketball New Zealand said they were still to confirm his availability.

Basketball New Zealand has since received the following statement from Steven Adams' agent at Wasserman Media Group.

"Steven's support of the Tall Blacks and his interest in playing for the program at some point down the line is unwavering.
