8 year old injured in road accident

Salesi Sakalia said the accident occurred last Friday.

“My son was crossing the road and he didn’t see the truck coming at him too fast. They tried to swerve away from him but couldn’t and they ended up running over his feet and my son was just way in the middle of the road to try to escape the truck.”

Tonga sevens team hopeful for World Series boost

Tonga finished runners-up behind Australia at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Auckland, producing the biggest upset of the weekend by thrashing Samoa 41-5 in the semifinals.

That was enough to keep alive their hopes of making it to Rio, and they will join Samoa at a final repechage event next year.

In the past their efforts would also have earnt them a spot at the New Zealand and Australian legs of the World Series but World Rugby has yet to confirm how those places will be allocated.

Acting PM meets ITU executive for Telecommunication Development Bureau

Sanou presented his respect to the Government of Tonga last week for the great achievements and their full support on him and the ITU. 

It was his first official visit to Tonga since taking the office in January, 2011.

Fuel prices decrease in Tonga

The retail price for Petrol has decreased by approximately -4.93 seniti/litre to a new price of 232.97 seniti/litre.

Diesel has also decreased by -3.82 seniti/litre to a new price of 227.79 seniti per litre.

The retail price for Kerosene has dropped by -2.42 seniti/litre to a new price of 160.55 seniti per litre. All the changes include consumption tax.  

The new rates for November-December 2915 were approved by the Tonga Competent Authority (TCA) and came into effect yesterday.

Tonga's foreign exchange levy to begin

The one seniti levy is to help pay for the 2019 Pacific Games which Tonga will host.

The Minster for Infrastructure and Civil Aviation, Etuate Lavulavu said there are many complaints from the public and aviation organisations about the safety of people travelling by planes.

College fights peace making tactics don’t appeal to Vava‘u

The Principal of Mailefihi High School Liuaki Fungalei said there have been too many fights between high school students.

“But since I’ve started with this new role last year and now this is happening, I’d rather we follow the law, the time for peace making is long gone if such violence will just keep on continuing. This is a small country and I prefer seeking the assistance from the Police, let them work this out and solve it if peace making doesn’t work; let the law speak for we do not support violence and chaos in education,”Fungalei said.

Eua Wharf to be upgraded

Ports Authority, Board Master Hakaumotu Fakapelea, development officer Iketau Havili, and marine representative Mana Taunisila also talked about their plans to take over the operational management of the wharf.

The Minister for Revenue and Customs and Member of Parliament of ‘Eua, Tevita Lavemaau led the delegation to the island.

The authority said there are sections of the wharf that need to be upgraded.

The upgrade could see cruise ships berthing at Eua and bringing large numbers of tourists to the island.

Septic tanks to be upgraded in Nuku’alofa

Seventeen To‘umo‘ua of the Project Management Unit said they need to work on this because they have seen E-coli bacteria in water.

 “We are really looking into the importance of public facilities and restrooms at all houses and their elements especially as we are working towards sanitation. We started a Sanitation Project this month to bring more septic tanks into the country to help with the services of collection of water waste,” said To’umo’ua.

Workshop in Tonga to enhance floriculture knowledge and skills

The Secretary of the Floriculture Tonga, ‘Uliti Palu said flowers are famous and useful for occasions in the Tongan society.

He stated the workshop was organised to promote and motivate the knowledge and skills about floriculture.  

“The Tonga Business Enterprise Centre, TBEC under the Tonga Chamber of Commerce is funding this training and we are collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture in ensuring that floriculture be improved and have a different concentration apart from agriculture,” Palu said.
