Visa exemption for Chinese and Tongan nationals

From Friday this week, Chinese and Tongan nationals travelling between the two countries will not need entry visas.

The visa waiver agreement was jointly signed by Tongan Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva and the Chinese Ambassador to the kingdom, Huang Huaguang last June.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy says the Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement for Ordinary Passport Holders will be effective on 19 August.

Citizens from China and Tonga will be exempted from visa requirement for entry into, from or transit through the territory of the other for a period of stay not exceeding 30 days.

This visa exemption agreement does not apply to people who will be engaged in study, residence or employment as they will have to go through the normal process of visa application.

Speaking at the signing ceremony the Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva said this is a milestone in our relation  as it further promotes our friendly association, boosts tourism and other related sectors, contributes  to the growth of the economy and facilitates our people to people exchanges.

He said Tonga appreciates the new chapter in relationship with China and hopes many of their citizens will use the opportunity to travel, explore land and build connection with one another.

In 2012, China and Tonga signed a similar agreement that focused on visa exemption for Diplomatic, Official or Service Passports.

More than 800 Chinese people are living in Tonga according to the 2011 census figures.
